great looking knives abd great job for your first run. have you considered other finishes for the wood? I use CA glue for some of the pens i make, never tried wiping it on something thats not spinning on a lathe but im sure it would still work out, that zebra wood will look awesome with a shiny clear coat and CA glue is hard as rock when cured. Best part is it dries in minutes or seconds if you use Accelerator on it. search you tube for CA finish.

the best way to get it good and soft to work with is get it hot enough a magnet won’t stick to and then lay it in a bed of hot wood ash, let it cool overnight.

I think your knife is fine. I’ve made a few knives and yours are pretty damn good.

any blade will dull with time, no matter what it is. Depends on what you cut with it. Put it this way, I skinned my elk this year with 3 knives I made. They got the job done. Check out my NM Elk video

how long do they stay sharp?

  11. XSwingGolf says:

@TRAPnHUNT I did blue before I put the handles on. The problem is with shaping and sanding the handles will take some bluing off so you have to touch it up when you’re done.

  12. TRAPnHUNT says:

Why didnt you blue the blades before you put the handles on?

RAGINSMASH check out the farrier file knife video

I’m kind of disappointed that I isn’t get to see the finished product of the file but I’m sure it would be a good multi-purpose weapon. If I ever make a knife then I will follow these guidelines.

You sir have done a great job in this video. My grandad showed me how to do the same thing with old saw blades. Made a full kitchen cutlery set with a filet knife and the one thing that was the hardest was experimenting with tempering because some knives you want to be flexable and others you want no flex at all. I’m trying to use old snowplow scraper bars now to make machetes and also some leaf springs. Thanks for the video!

i like u’r knives.face it,u got bit by the knife makin bug.lol. i don’t polish my blades either.i like the rustic look.i was impressed that u used hand tools more, when i saw all the power tools in your shop.after i made a few knives i met a knife-maker down the road from where i live.he suggested i try some of his fancy power machines…bad mistake on my part.

    @XSwingGolf
    thank you

  22. XSwingGolf says:

@SkidmoreRacing yes I did watch this video of my heat treating method. Tempering time was changed. Temper 450 degrees for 1 hour.

  23. SkidmoreRacing says:

@XSwingGolf did you let the blades air cool after you took them out of the toaster oven??

  24. XSwingGolf says:

@allengoodman69 hey man I’m not doin the SoF2 thing anymore. Check my Elk video out. I skinned it out with 3 of my knives.
