I am an EMT by profession. I was looking for a knife I could carry on and off work, one that’s light, tough as nails but easy on the budget. I was thinking about the Spyderco Tenacious and the Ontario R.A.T. I but both were a bit heavy and bulky. Plus, the blade design on those (and regular) knives are not “patient” friendly. However, the Byrd Meadowlark Rescue Knife fits the bill perfectly.
First of all this knife came razor sharp out of the box! I mean LITERALLY hair shaving sharp! Its good for delicate cutting as well as tough jobs. I’ve tested it on paper, heavy coats, jeans, tarp, turnout gear and even on Manila rope. This is one sharp knife! I usually use trauma shears to cut clothing, but in an emergency situation when the shears are not available, this will do the job nicely. Specially with the Sheep’s Foot design, there is less chance of poking the patient. Unlike the Gerber Hinderer or the Camillus rescue knife, the Meadowlark has a sharp point but due to its design, the point is far enough from the spine of the knife that it could be used without poking or puncturing. Ths feature makes it also ideal for EDC (incidentally, the finger choil also serves as a thumb rest when inverting the knife to cut through clothing).
About the weight, the Meadowlark Rescue is light (2.6 oz.)! I’ve been EDCing it for a while and it doesnt weigh down pockets in BDUs or in regular jeans. It is fully ambidextroous, allowing you to carry it left or right handed, tip up or tip down. Its small enough to be carried comfortably yet the blade is long enough to do a vast array of jobs. It isnt a hefty knife but it feels really solid.
Blade deployment is fast and the textured FRN handle is comfortable yet very grippy. Lock up is good and tight with no blade play whatsoever and the “Comet Hole” makes the knife easy to open even with gloves (it even feels easier to open than a Spyderco).
This is one WICKED knife!!!
